If your espresso maker is on the ‘fritz’ or you simply don’t have one, you can make a thirst quenching iced cappuccino using ordinary instant coffee out of the jar.
If you’re not a fan of instant coffee, don’t worry. This actually tastes quite delicious and is a great back up on a hot summers day when your coffee maker is broken or during a power cut!
But make sure you use top quality instant granules, or you your guests may not visit again.
What you will need:
- 2 tablespoons of strong instant coffee
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- Ice cubes
- 1/3 cup of cream
- cinnamon or cocoa powder – garnish.
You will also need a blender for the ice cubes.
First make the Cappuccino!
Fill your mug with milk about three quarters of the way to the top and then transfer it to a saucepan to heat it up (You can heat the milk in a microwave, but I find that milk tastes different somehow when heated in a microwave.)
So I always heat up milk (whatever I am using it for), in a saucepan.
In your mug, put the instant coffee granules and your preferred amount of sugar, and mix it with a small amount of the hot milk until dissolved and very aromatic (depending on your choice of coffee). Then pour in the rest of the hot milk.
You should get a bit of froth just from adding the milk to the cup, but it’s not important at this point.
Important: Remember that milk heats up VERY quickly when it starts boiling and if you are not vigilant, you could lose a good proportion of it over the sides of the saucepan. Oh yes, you could burn yourself too!
Now the ‘iced part’!
Cover your hot mug of cappuccino and let it cool down to room temperature, either on a kitchen top or just put it in the fridge for an hour
When it has cooled to your liking, pour it into a blender with a glass of ice cubes.
Blend the mix for a little while, until the ice has been crushed. Next add the cream and continue blending until your chilled coffee beverage has gone frothy.
Then pour into a glass (glasses if you made it for a few people) and all that is left to do then is garnish with cocoa powder and cinnamon. You can even add a squirt of whipped cream on top!
Enjoy on a hot summers day!
