About Starbucks
First opened in Seattle’s Pike Place Market in 1971, Starbucks original name was ‘Starbucks Coffee, Tea, and Spices’ which was later changed to Starbucks Coffee Company and has just been honoured with the ‘Most Ethical Company in Europe Award’ in Vienna, on 9th October 2009. The coffee research experts Allegra Strategies, awarded Starbucks this award along with them also winning the ‘Most Admired Coffee Chain Brand’ in France.
Nominations for Seattle’s coffee company were from 300 coffee industry leaders in August and September 2009. They were privileged with these two awards because of their commitment to Fairtrade certified coffee and their Shared Planet coffees which they announced they are serving in Stores in the UK and Ireland.
A Statement by Jeffrey Young, the Managing Director of Allegra Strategies said, “Starbucks have made great strides across Europe in representing the ethical commitment of our industry. From the local community involvement of its stores and partners to its global targets for ethical sourcing and sustainability the company has fulfilled its commitments across Europe. It is no surprise that Starbucks has been recognized by the industry.”
Starbucks Coffee Locations
The Starbucks Coffee Company has over 16,000 coffee shops and stores in around 49 countries around the world, with around 11,000 Starbucks locations within the 50 States of The United States alone. So finding a coffee store near you shouldn’t be to much of a challenge!
From Miami to Seattle, to London down to Sydney in Australia, national and international, you will find a Starbucks Coffee Location everywhere you look, with a new store opening everywhere you look! There are over 4,500 company operated and joint venture stores internationally.
The Starbucks Logo
The Starbucks Logo has a certain history itself, from the Nordic inspired woodcut to the summer grass green logo it is today. After failed attempts by Howard Schultz to get the Starbucks owners to focus on serving espresso coffee in 1986, he opened the Il Giornarle cafe – his espresso bar themed cafe. And then in 1987 Schultz bought the Starbucks coffee company, bringing along the Il Giornarle espresso theme and his green circle logo.
This was the logo from 1971 – 1987.
A design based on sixteenth century Norse woodcut. The two tailed mermaid was as seductive as Starbucks coffee itself, supposedly.

Then in 1987 right up to 1992, when Starbucks changed the logo to the contemporary design today, it looked like this, a mix of both Starbucks and Il Giornarle.
This is the Starbucks we know and love today.
The Starbucks Unofficial Motto?
“It’s about being the third place: home, work and Starbucks – the place in between!” What a great perception people have about Starbucks – makes me want to go out and just, experience the espresso bar feel they provide! Combining that from their official statement on their about us web page, ‘We always figured that putting people before products just made good common sense”, you can see why Starbucks is such a success.
The Starbucks Mission
They put it like this, “To inspire and nurture the human spirit— one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time”. From the quality of the coffees, the caring of their partners to connecting with their customers and shareholders, Starbucks mission statement tells it all, “Starbucks is committed to a role of environmental leadership in all facets of our business”.
